Every healthcare provider has a patient that they will never forget. A man came into the emergency department having a heart attack. His sister was sobbing, and he was turning blue, thankfully we got him stabilized. As I collected the medication history on the patient, I realized that he not only stopped taking all of his blood pressure and diabetic medications, but he was also taking multiple supplements that contained high amounts of potassium, leading to toxic potassium levels!

The patient thought that because his supplements were over-the-counter and labeled “all natural,” these medications were safer than prescription medications.

After this incident that I realized how many people don’t understand what they’re putting in their mouths. They think “natural” means safer—but it doesn’t! The community needs to learn safer practices of incorporating vitamins and supplements into their medication therapy.

Growing up in a Caribbean family, I know that herbalists are just as respected as pharmacists; they’re equally integral parts of our culture and health care system. As a clinician, I knew I had to take an integrative approach to managing disease states if I wanted to serve my community properly.

That’s why KIHS Wellness exists: I developed KIHS wellness—keeping it healthy and simple—to break down the chaos in the vitamin and supplement industry. Using evidence based medicine, I provide personalized vitamin and supplement treatment plans based on your specific needs.
